I rank teams weekly based upon how I believe they will finish at the end of the season. This is a controversial system but is strangely more accurate than the AP and Coaches poles, which typically have more movement during the season. If you win, I will not move you down. Winning is positive and should be rewarded unlike the AP. This strategy requires me to spend more time to wisely choose who should be at the top, but I think it is a good thing. If you beat an FCS team, I will not move you backwards for taking a week off. However, there is a good chance that I may not move you up in the poll and a team that played an FBS opponent will get a chance to move up quicker and be rewarded for their choice to play a team at their FBS level.

I am keeping the PAC 12 and the MAC out of the top 25 for now until they actually play a game.

WHERE WE STAND AT THE MIDPOINT AND THE PICKS

October 22, 2020

WHERE WE STAND AT THE MIDPOINT
Welcome to week 8 and what is normally the halfway point in the college football season. Not so much in 2020. Of the 127 playing FBS college football this season (Old Dominion, New Mexico State and UConn opted out) 51 have not played a game yet. That changes this weekend as the Big 10, The Mountain West and Rice all have games scheduled. The PAC 12 and the MAC will wait two more weeks before they are scheduled to play a game.

That brings me to the rankings and the College Football Playoff. There are five Big 10 teams and two PAC 12 teams in the AP Top 25. The difference from my poll and the AP is that I refused to rank a team that hasn’t played a game ahead of a team that has played this season. That leaves a few teams sitting on the outside, but it does give the teams that decided to play their due. 2020 has been great for the Group of Five teams that got ESPN Primetime coverage on a night that otherwise would have seen them on ESPN3. Now the question is how to rank them from here?

We are at the midpoint in the season but only several teams in the ACC, CUSA, Sun Belt and BYU have played 50% of their schedule. How do you judge them against teams that have only played four games? Better yet, by the time the PAC 12 and the MAC play, some of the teams could have nine games under their belt. Then there is the end of the season. How do you let a 6-0 PAC 12 or MAC team or a 8-0 Big 10 or Mountain West team into the playoff and leave a team that is sitting at 12-0, 11-0, 11-1 or 10-1 on the sideline? It could happen with ten teams with a 3-0 or better undefeated record this season.

The real answer is to expand the playoffs to eight or better yet sixteen just like the NHL, NBA and MLB did. That suggestion has fallen on deaf ears. We will eventually expand to eight and then sixteen. In a year of oddities, why not try it out now?

NOTES ON GAMES PLAYED AND WHAT IS SCHEDULED LEANDING INTO WEEK 8:
Notre Dame 4 games played. 12 games scheduled.
ACC 6-4 games played. 11-10 games scheduled.
CUSA 6-0 (Rice 0-0) games played. 11-6 games scheduled.
Sun Belt 6-3 games played. 11-10 games scheduled.
Liberty 5 games played. 11 games scheduled.
AAC 5-2 games played. 11-10 games scheduled.
Big 12 4-2 games played. 10-9 games scheduled.
SEC 4-3 games played. 10-9 games scheduled.
BYU 5 games played. 10 games scheduled.
Big 10 begins play this weekend. 8 games scheduled.
MW begins play this weekend. 8 games scheduled.
Pac 12 begins play November 7. 6 games scheduled.
MAC begins play November 4. 6 games scheduled.
UMass 1 game played. 3 games scheduled.

Now here are this week’s picks:

Nebraska at Ohio State
Back in the day this might have been something. But university greed and wishy-washy impatient fans have taken the bite out of Nebraska Football. The Huskers will come back if fans are patient and don’t fire their coach this year. But there will be no upset this weekend. Ohio State for the win.

Kansas at Kansas State
It is the Sunflower Showdown. Rivalry games are the best because anything can happen. Unfortunately, Kansas has neglected it football program for so long that this game could be one sided. Kansas State for the win.

Charlie’s Pick: Kansas State

Rutgers at Michigan State
Michigan State has Struggled in the last few years. But not as bad as Rutgers which seems to be the worst team in the Big 10 annually. Michigan State for the win.

Charlie’s Pick: Michigan State
Dustin’s Pick: Michigan State

Alabama at UTK
It’s the Third Saturday in October. Remember when this was the biggest game in the SEC every year? The luster left along with the “Great Pumpkin” Phil Fulmer. But it’s a rivalry so anything could happen. Naaaa. Alabama for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Alabama

Notre Dame at Pitt
If Notre Dame struggled putting points on the board against Louisville. They may struggle again this week. This is what happens when you stop playing cupcakes and start playing decent teams. Notre Dame for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Notre Dame
Charlie’s Pick: Notre Dame
Dustin’s Pick: Notre Dame

Penn State at Indiana
Indiana plays teams tough at home. Penn State has a shot at the Big 10 title if they can find a way around Ohio State. It starts with a win this weekend. Penn State for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Penn State
Charlie’s Pick: Penn State
Dustin’s Pick: Indiana

Iowa at Purdue
This is a tough one. The first game if the year (albeit in week 8) is often filled with mistakes. This game may be determined by who can execute the little things. Iowa for the win.

Utah State at Boise State
This could be your battle for the Mountain West Championship in week one. Thanks 2020. Boise State for the win.

Wyoming at Nevada
Tossup. Wyoming for the win.

Michigan at Minnesota
Anything could happen in the first game of this season. Only in 2020 do we open with the battle for the Little Brown Jug. In 1903 Michigan was nervous that Minnesota fans may poison their water supply and purchased a five-gallon beehive jug to carry their water in. A few years later they decided to make it a rivalry trophy. The two teams have met 103 times with Michigan getting the better of Minnesota 75-25-3. Since 1968 Minnesota has only won four times. But two of those have come in the last ten years. The folks in arid regions know something and say the Wolverines will win by a field goal. I beg to differ. Minnesota in a close one for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Michigan
Charlie’s Pick: Minnesota
Dustin’s Pick: Minnesota

Hawaii at Fresno State
College Football now knows what Hawaii has known for years. That the state produces remarkable football players. Now students that would have played for Hawaii are playing all over the mainland. So, you would want to count them out this season. But you can’t because you k=never know what they are going to do. This should be a close one. Fresno State for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Fresno State
Charlie’s Pick: Fresno State
Dustin’s Pick: Fresno State

Maryland at Northwestern
It used to be that Maryland was known for two things, crab cakes and football. Now it is only crab cakes. Could they bounce back this year? Northwestern is interesting. There are bright spots and then they eventually become an also ran. Maryland will struggle while at least for this weekend, the Wildcats will end their week one undefeated. Northwestern for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Northwestern
Charlie’s Pick: Northwestern
Dustin’s Pick: Northwestern

UNLV at SDSU
UNLV might be one of the worst programs in FBS right now. SDSU are one of the best teams in the Mountain West. SDSU for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: SDSU
Charlie’s Pick: SDSU
Dustin’s Pick: SDSU

Air Force at San Jose State
Air Force have one win (Navy) under their belt. Let’s make that two. Air Force for the win.

I am keeping the Big 10, PAC 12, MAC and the Mountain West out of the top 25 for now until they actually play a game.

COVID AND THE PICKS

October 15, 2020

COVID AND THE PICKS
Traditionally in past years we have selected ten FBS games every week. This season we have selected 14 to 12 games a week hoping to have a minimum of 10 games picked every week after cancellations. As of this writing we have lost three of our 14 selected games for this week. College Football like the rest of the world is struggling with staying healthy and at the same time trying to be normal. Nick Saban tested positive as teams in college football have struggled to keep their programs going. Wear a mask. Follow the guidelines and most of all stay healthy so we can enjoy the great game we love.

Now here are this week’s picks:

THE RETURN OF MACtion AND THE PICKS

October 8, 2020

THE RETURN OF MACtion AND THE PICKS
The MAC announced that it would be returning to play Nov. 4 and have their conference championship on December 18, the same weekend that most of the other conferences will be playing their championships. Now all three FBS conference that decided to not play this fall are all now scheduled to play again. Bowl games are potentially up in the air, but the College Football Playoff is still on schedule for Semifinals on January 1 and the championship game on January 11.

We now have 126 of 130 FBS teams with a schedule and waiting to play. (That will be reflected in my next poll.) UMass announced they were returning to play. The problem is that no one has answered the call to put the Independent on the schedule. But they are waiting and willing.

Ryan McGee, ESPN Writer in his column the Bottom Ten summed up their predicament by saying:

“Massachusetts is still trying to book some games for fall 2020 and holds out hope that some last-minute dates might come its way. For anyone else, that would be a problem. But the Minutemen have been suiting up with little or no notice since Lexington and Concord.”

However, there is a good chance that I may not move you up in the poll and a team that played an FBS opponent will get a chance to move up quicker and be rewarded for their choice to play a team at their FBS level.

As the Big 10, PAC 12 and the Mountain West have decided to join the fray, I am ranking them now as teams that haven’t played yet. Once they actually play a game, I will move them up or down accordingly. The MAC has indicated that they plan on playing but until they release their schedule, I will not rank them in any fashion.

PAC 12 PROPOSED 8 TEAM PLAYOFF AND IS SHOT DOWN PLUS WEEK FOUR PICKS

PAC 12 PROPOSED 8 TEAM PLAYOFF AND IS SHOT DOWN PLUS WEEK FOUR PICKS
It was proposed but it won’t happen this season. PAC12 commissioner Larry Scott proposed an eight-team playoff for this season but the CFP committee said no. Apparently it would be too significant of a change so late in the process to be doable for this season. But if there is any season to give it a try this is it. There is no true normal in this season. Conferences are starting and ending in different times. Teams are playing anywhere from six to eleven games this season. Games are being dropped and added as the season is going on because of COVID. Oh, yea we are also playing in December which is something that the CFP committee previously said can’t be done for academic reasons. So much for academia. For the format to change it would need the support of the ten FBS conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s AD. So, for 2020 there is a normal, a four team most likely all Power Five playoff. Who gets in will be determined by a group of thirteen people.

Now here are this week’s picks:
