Playoffs? Playoffs!! Playoffs?

December 14, 2015

Playoffs? Playoffs!! Playoffs?

Yes playoffs. Lets not just do a little 4-team playoff but lets do a 16-team playoff. The Playoff would start on December 19 with 8 games, the following weekend it would be 4 then the semi finals on January 2 and the championship game on January 11. (This is the same length of the current bowl season.) The locations would be bid similar to the men and women’s basketball tournaments.

Every conference (10 teams) would get an automatic bid for their conference champion providing that their champion has no more than one loss. If a conference cannot provide a champion with one loss or less then there would be an extra at large spot. Independent non-conference teams would have to get into the playoffs by securing an at large spot. There would be at least 6 at large spots available. In the case of this season only the AAC (Houston (12-1), ACC (Clemson (13-0), Big 12 (Oklahoma (11-1), Big 10 (Michigan State (12-1) and the SEC (Alabama (12-1) had teams that qualified for automatic bids. With only 5 automatic bids this season that makes for 11 at large spots.

For the purposes of this discussion we will be using my rankings to seed the field. I kicked out Appalachian State and Western Kentucky because of their low quality wins. Toledo might have made it in because they beat both Arkansas and Iowa State. However their loss to Western Michigan and only playing a 11 game schedule killed them. That is why I moved North Carolina and Florida up.

Here is my field of 16 for the playoffs:

1. Clemson (13-0) ACC Champion
2. Alabama (12-1) SEC Champion
3. Michigan State (12-1) Big 10 Champion
4. Oklahoma (11-1) Big 12 Champion
5. Houston (12-1) AAC Champion
6. Ohio State (11-1)
7. Iowa (12-1)
8. TCU (10-2)
9. Northwestern (10-2)
10. Stanford (11-2) PAC 12 Champion
11. Notre Dame (10-2)
12. Navy (9-2)
13. Oklahoma State (10-2)
14. Florida State (10-2)
15. North Carolina (11-2)
16. Florida (10-3)

Conference Champions:
Houston (12-1) AAC
Clemson (13-0) ACC
Oklahoma (11-1) Big 12
Michigan State (12-1) Big 10
Does not have a qualifying champion CUSA (Western Kentucky 11-2)
Does not have a qualifying champion MAC (Bowling Green 10-3)
Does not have a qualifying champion Mountain West SDSU (10-3)
Does not have a qualifying champion PAC 12 Stanford (11-2)
Alabama (12-1) SEC
Does not have a qualifying champion Sunbelt (Arkansas State 9-3)

My Games of the Week Results

December 8, 2015

Finally, this has been a great season of college football. There have been some good upsets. The race to who would be crowned the best picker was close in the 15 weeks of the season. I would like to thank Charlie, Dustin and the Celebrity Guest Picker for spending the last 15 weeks giving of their time. Thanks also to Dustin to selecting the games to be picked.

This year I avenged my lost to Charlie last year. Last season he won with 96-54 compared to my 95-55 record. This is my best finish ever for picking games in four years:

2015: 109-31
2014: 95-55
2013: 102-48
2012: 103-37

Here are the results from this season:

I rank teams weekly based upon how I believe they will finish at the end of the season. This is a controversial system but is strangely more accurate than the AP and Coaches poles, which typically have more movement during the season.

FINAL THOUGHT: The Losing Bowls
Too may bowls and not enough teams. There are 40 bowls out there. That means there is a need for 80 teams to go to bowls. The problem is that there are only 75 bowl eligible teams currently. That number could climb to 78 if Kansas State, Georgia State and South Alabama all win their games this weekend. That means the bowls must fill at least two positions with 5-7 teams. But do 5-7 teams really need to go? Why not invite FCS schools? Oh wait.. the good FCS schools are involved in a real playoff right now.
