A Sixteen Team Playoff with a True Champion
I have been harping on a sixteen playoff for a long time. Certainly, the matchups before will be more exciting than some of the boring bowls that will come our way during the same time period in December.

Let’s put my plan into practice using the current College Football Playoff Rankings. My rules are simple. We take the top sixteen teams in their ranking and if necessary boot out the last few teams giving automatic bids to teams that have one loss or less and are their conference champions. Like in the past several years there will be no need for an automatic bid because the teams that fit that criteria are already in the top sixteen. Every site that hosts a playoff will bid on the opportunity much like basketball. For this simulation we will use active bowl sites. We will simulate the games using the last version of EA Sports College Football before it was discontinued. I will update the results.

The sweet sixteen features:
1. Alabama (13-0) SEC Champion vs 16. West Virginia (8-3) At Large Bid
2. Clemson (13-0) ACC Champion vs 15. Texas (9-4) At Large Bid
3. Notre Dame (12-0) At Large Bid vs 14. Kentucky (9-3) At Large Bid
4. Oklahoma (12-1) Big 12 Champion vs 13. Washington State (10-2) At Large Bid
5. Georgia (11-2) At Large Bid vs 12. Penn State (9-3) At Large Bid
6. Ohio State (12-1) Big 10 Champion vs 11. LSU (9-3) At Large Bid
7. Michigan (10-2) At Large Bid vs 10. Florida (9-3) At Large Bid
8. UCF (12-0) AAC Champion vs 9. Washington (10-3) (PAC 12 Champion) At Large Bid

I rank teams weekly based upon how I believe they will finish at the end of the season. This is a controversial system but is strangely more accurate than the AP and Coaches poles, which typically have more movement during the season. If you win I will not move you down. Winning is positive and should be rewarded unlike the AP. This strategy requires me to spend more time to wisely choose who should be at the top but I think it is a good thing. If you beat an FCS team I will not move you backwards for taking a week off. However, there is a good chance that I may not move you up in the poll and a team that played a FBS opponent will get a chance to move up quicker and be rewarded for their choice to play a team at their FBS level.

PLAYOFFS
If I could run FBS college football I would expand the playoff to 16 teams with each of the 10 conferences getting an automatic bid if they are A) the conference champion and B) have one loss or are undefeated on the season. The rest of the slots would be filled by at large teams with seeding and spots determined by my rankings.

Here are my playoff projected rankings:
1. UCF (12-0) AAC Champion
2. Clemson (13-0) ACC Champion
3. Alabama (13-0) SEC Champion
4. Notre Dame (12-0) At Large Bid
5. Oklahoma (12-1) Big 12 Champion

16. Buffalo (10-2) At Large Bid

(The locations for these games would be bid out just like men’s and women’s basketball. Teams not in the playoff and still bowl eligible would play in the bowls that did not make bids to host a playoff game. The length of the playoffs would be 4 weeks which is the current length of the bowl season.)

If we had a sixteen-team playoff using my formula and based on the College Football Playoff committee’s rankings it would look like this:
1. Alabama (12-0) SEC Champion
2. Clemson (12-0) ACC Champion
3. Notre Dame (12-0) At Large Bid
4. Georgia (11-1) At Large Bid
5. Oklahoma (11-1) Big 12 Champion
