My Games of the Week (Week Thirteen)

November 25, 2016

My Games of the Week (Week Thirteen)
I hope your turkey settled right because there could be some upset stomachs and hurt feelings this weekend. It’s Rivalry Week. From The Apple Cup to The Palmetto Bowl to the playoffs, this week’s games mean more. Conference championships are on the line while other teams are just trying to become bowl eligible. Yea this is a good weekend for watching college football. Now here are this week’s picks:

The Apple Cup: Washington at Washington State
In their 108th meeting it has been Washington that has had the upper hand going 70-32-6. I want to see Washington State succeed because they are a great story. But it will be their foe, Washington with the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Washington
Charlie’s Pick: Washington
Dustin’s Pick: Washinton

Governor’s Cup: Kentucky at Louisville
They have only met 28 times but that is 28 times too few in my opinion. This game is a natural rivalry. Kentucky has a six-win season while Louisville has had one of the schools best records in recent history. Louisville wins at home.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Louisville
Charlie’s Pick: Louisville
Dustin’s Pick: Louisville

The Game: Michigan at Ohio State
There is a lot of hate that has been built up in 111 meetings. This one has so many ramifications to it. This game could go either way. I am taking the Luckeyes at home.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Ohio State
Charlie’s Pick: Ohio State
Dustin’s Pick: Michigan

The Egg Bowl: Mississippi State at Ole Miss
The eleven games in the season prior do not matter when it comes down to the final game of the year in the state of Mississippi. Throw out the records. In the past 112 meetings the team with the best record did not always win. That is how you define a spiteful rivalry. I like Dan Mullen. I hope the administration at Mississippi State stands behind him because better days are ahead. On the other hand Ole Miss has gone though some rough patches with the NCAA this year. The good guys don’t always win. Ole Miss with the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Ole Miss
Charlie’s Pick: Ole Miss
Dustin’s Pick: Ole Miss

The Iron Bowl: Auburn at Alabama
They have only met 80 times but it feels like the most heated rivalry in sports. It is year round. If you are born in the state of Alabama you pick a side or your parents do it for you. You can’t pick both. They will kick you out of the state for that. Both teams have had great seasons this year. Alabama leads the series 44-35-1. Saturday they stretch their winning streak to three games. Alabama for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Alabama
Charlie’s Pick: Alabama
Dustin’s Pick: Alabama

Battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe: Minnesota at Wisconsin
In 126 meetings you would think this rivalry would get dull. Nope, they just grind on the axe. Minnesota may not have a chance but they will fight like they do. Wisconsin wins at home.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Wisconsin
Charlie’s Pick: Wisconsin
Dustin’s Pick: Wisconsin

The Civil War: Oregon at Oregon State
In a state that seems so relaxed how could there be so much hate? Take 119 games that are anything but nice and you can get a good storm of hate brewing. Both teams have had terrible seasons. Neither is going bowling. This game is the only thing that matters now. The Ducks have won the last eight meetings. That streak ends Saturday. Oregon State for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Oregon State
Charlie’s Pick: Oregon
Dustin’s Pick: Oregon State

The Palmetto Bowl: South Carolina at Clemson
We have seen blowouts, nail biters and all out brawls in 113 meetings. South Carolina has not had the great season their instate rival has. But Clemson has a lot to play for. Clemson with the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Clemson
Charlie’s Pick: Clemson
Dustin’s Pick: Clemson

UTK at Vanderbilt
They remember what you do in November. That was a favorite saying of the great pumpkin Phil Fulmer. In 110 meetings UTK is 75-30-5 with most of those Vandy wins coming before the General Bob Neyland took the helm. Since then the Vols have dominated the series. UTK wins.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Vanderbilt
Charlie’s Pick: Vanderbilt
Dustin’s Pick: Vanderbilt

Florida at Florida State
It has only 60 meetings but these two schools compete at everything. Florida leads the series 34-24-2 but Florida State has won the last three games. The Seminoles are at home. Florida State for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Florida State
Charlie’s Pick: Florida
Dustin’s Pick: Florida

Bonus Games:
NCAA FBS Playoffs: Central Arkansas vs Illinois State
Both teams have more than one loss coming into the playoffs. Illinois State is a perennial playoff program but it will be Central Arkansas winning at home.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Illinois State
Charlie’s Pick: Illinois State
Dustin’s Pick: Illinois State

NCAA D2 Playoffs: Ferris State vs Colorado School of Mines
Ferris State has a heck of a hockey program. Ferris State for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Colorado School of Mines
Charlie’s Pick: Colorado School of Mines
Dustin’s Pick: Ferris State

NCAA D3 Playoffs: Coe at St Thomas
Coe is a nice place to send your kid to college. That’s about all I can say good about this matchup. The machine rolls on.. St. Thomas for the win.

Celebrity Guest Picker: St. Thomas
Charlie’s Pick: St. Thomas
Dustin’s Pick: St. Thomas

WHO’S IN?
For the last two weeks Western Michigan has not moved up in the College Football Playoff Rankings despite being one of only two undefeated teams in FBS football. Again they are stuck behind four, three loss teams (USC, Auburn and UTK). While the AP has them at 14 and the Coaches at 18 according to the folks that say who and who will not be in the playoff they are no better than 21. So what happens when they beat Toledo this weekend, beat Ohio in the MAC Championship next weekend and win their bowl game? Will they still be 21st then at 14-0? Their last loss was November 18, 2015 well over a year ago. At some point the selection committee needs to look beyond the TV ratings and the large markets the the marquee teams represent and focus on the actual teams and players that deserve something for their effort.

I stand by my plan (see below). Instead of just four teams lets make it a sixteen-team playoff. Lets lock the champions* from the 10 conferences in. To get locked into my playoff you must be the conference champion and you must have no more than one loss. After that there will be six or more at large (if there are not enough one loss champion spots) positions.

WHO’S IN?
It is a sham that the College Football Playoffs has Western Michigan ranked at #21 for the second week in a row. College football experts do not deny the impressive wins over Northwestern and Illinois but write them off as “early games” and call the conference soft. The MAC has beaten four “power five” conference teams this year. WMU crushed Central Michigan who best Oklahoma State. Ohio beat lowly Kansas. Yet the Big 12 and Big 10 teams are talked about as having tough schedules. I am not asking for Western Michigan to be ranked ahead of Alabama. I just believe it is unfair for a team to do everything right, have a perfect season and miss out on the playoffs. Especially to a two loss team that failed twice. WMU is ranked behind five teams that have three losses. According to the poll they will not even get the one NYE bowl spot reserved for the “group of five.” That spot would go to one loss Boise State.

I’m just a little frustrated. Here is my plan and how I would make the playoffs work if given the opportunity. The powers that be need be honest and expand the playoffs to sixteen teams per my rules that follow. The College Football Playoff needs to be expanded to eight or sixteen and all one hundred and twenty eight FBS schools deserve an equal shot at the playoffs. You go undefeated and are your conference champion why wouldn’t you get a spot? That is how the other NCAA sanctioned sports and divisions work. There will be many arguments as to who will be in and why but I have a better plan. Instead of just four teams lets make it a sixteen-team playoff. Lets lock the champions* from the 10 conferences in. To get locked into my playoff you must be the conference champion and you must have no more than one loss. After that there will be six or more at large (if there are not enough one loss champion spots) positions.

I rank teams weekly based upon how I believe they will finish at the end of the season. This is a controversial system but is strangely more accurate than the AP and Coaches poles, which typically have more movement during the season.

My Games of the Week (Week Eleven)

November 10, 2016

My Games of the Week (Week Eleven)
As the end of the season draws near some teams are looking for the playoff, others are looking to go bowling yet others are trying to keep above .500. Who will win and meet their goals and who will fall by the wayside? Find out in this week’s picks:

Utah at Arizona State
Utah travels to the Valley of the Sun sitting third in the division standings just above Arizona State who has had a less than spectacular year. The struggles continue as Utah wins again.

Celebrity Guest Picker: Utah
Charlie’s Pick: Utah
Dustin’s Pick: Utah

Baylor at Oklahoma
Oklahoma has already had their two choke games of the season and this won’t be another. Baylor is missing their key running back. Oklahoma wins.

USC at Washington
I like Clay Helton. I want to see him win but Washington is the better. Washington for the win.

New Mexico at Utah State
This one is a tough game to pick. If you look at their records you will find that New Mexico is the better team. Their one common opponent Air Force fell to the Lobos while the Aggies lost to Air Force. The bottom line is that New Mexico’s schedule has been S-A-W-F-T. I’m going with Utah State because of that and they are at home.

Michigan at Iowa
This should be a tough call but unfortunately its not. Michigan runs all over Iowa.

Dustin’s Pick: Northern State

D3: Cortland State at Ithaca College
Ithaca College is 5-4 and Courtland State is 4-5 coming into this matchup but really throw all the records out. This one is for the Cortaca Jug. Its a three day party the culminates in a sold out game with fifty-seven years of history. These two schools are separated by only twenty-one miles. If that is not a rivalry then you need to know that the party got out of hand in 2013 when fans rioted flipping cars; leading to the arrest of thirty people. Nothing says rivalry like a riot. Ithaca holds the record for most wins 34-23 but Cortland State has won the last six meetings. That streak stops this weekend. Ithaca College for the win.

PLAYOFF SEEDS
We had some movement in the rankings this week with the fall of Texas A&M but the top six teams remain the same. I believe these rankings reflect a good number of the top teams in college football and would make for a great playoff system if the powers that be would be honest and expand the playoffs to sixteen teams per my rules that follow. So here are this weeks playoff seeds:

1. Alabama Projected qualifying SEC Champion
2. Clemson Projected qualifying ACC Champion
3. Michigan Projected qualifying Big 10 Champion
4. Washington Projected qualifying Pac 12 Champion
5. Louisville Projected At-Large
6. Western Michigan Projected qualifying MAC Champion
7. SDSU Projected qualifying Mountain West Champion
8. Boise State Projected At-Large
9. Troy Projected qualifying Sun Belt Champion
10. West Virginia Projected qualifying Big 12 Champion
11. Penn State Projected At-Large
12. Wisconsin Projected At-Large
13. Texas A&M Projected At-Large
14. Oklahoma Projected At-Large
15. Virginia Tech Projected At-Large
16. Ohio State Projected At-Large

These Conferences did not have a Qualifying Champion (More than one loss):
AAC, C-USA and Independent

PLAYOFF SEEDS
Well the College Football Playoff rankings have been announced and while it is a better system than the BCS, clearly it needs to be expanded to eight or sixteen and all one hundred and twenty eight FBS schools deserve an equal shot at the playoffs. So here are this weeks playoff seeds:

1. Alabama Projected qualifying SEC Champion
2. Clemson Projected qualifying ACC Champion
3. Michigan Projected qualifying Big 10 Champion
4. Washington Projected qualifying Pac 12 Champion
5. Louisville Projected At-Large
6. Western Michigan Projected qualifying MAC Champion
7. Texas A&M Projected At-Large
8. SDSU Projected qualifying Mountain West Champion
9. Boise State Projected At-Large
10. West Virginia Projected qualifying Big 12 Champion
11. Troy Projected qualifying SunBelt Champion
12. Wisconsin Projected At-Large
13. Florida Projected At-Large
14. Nebraska Projected At-Large
15. Ohio State Projected At-Large
16. Baylor Projected At-Large

These Conferences did not have a Qualifying Champion (More than one loss):
AAC, C-USA and Independent
