Playoffs.. Playoffs?

Playoffs.. Playoffs?

What would a college football playoff look like and what would be the outcome? I would propose a 24-team playoff bracket that is patterned exactly like the current FCS playoffs. Every conference (10) in FBS would send their champions. There would be 14 At Large Teams. I seeded the teams according to the current BCS standings. The seeding’s would look like this:

College Football Playoff 24 teams patterned after D1 FCS
1 ACC Champion Florida State
2 SEC Champion Auburn
3 At Large Alabama
4 Big 10 Champion Michigan State
5 Pac 12 Champion Stanford
6 Big 12 Champion Baylor
7 At Large Ohio State
8 At Large Missouri
9 At Large South Carolina
10 At Large Oregon
11 At Large Oklahoma
12 At Large Clemson
13 At Large Oklahoma State
14 At Large Arizona State
15 AAC Champion UCF
16 At Large LSU
17 At Large UCLA
18 At Large Louisville
19 At Large Wisconsin
20 Mountain West Champion Fresno State
21 At Large Texas A&M
22 MAC Champion Bowling Green
23 C-USA Champion Rice
24 Sun Belt Champion Louisiana

Using this year’s football calendar conference championship games would take place Dec 7, First round of the playoffs Dec 14, Second round of the playoffs Dec 21, Quarter Finals Dec 28, Semi Finals Jan 4 and the Championship game on Jan 11. The first two rounds would be played at the higher seed’s home stadium. Cities/ Stadiums would have a chance to bid on sites for the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and the Championship game much like the Final Four is bid out. The bracket would look like this:

bracket

How would this years playoff unfold? I am currently simulating games using EA Sports College Football and will have the results in a week.

My Games of the Week – Bowl Games

December 19, 2013

My Games of the Week – Bowl Games
Through 15 weeks of picking 10 games a week I picked 102 games correctly and missed 48 games. That is 2 out of 3 games were winners for me. Our guest pickers started in week 11. In five weeks our guest pickers went 29-21. Last week I went 8-2 and our guest picker went 4-6.

The bowl season is more difficult to pick with distractions, hiring, firings and injuries. I have always had trouble picking these games so I invited my friends that picked games with me this season.

To show my gratitude for the time that our guest pickers put in, I am inviting them to pick all of the bowl games with me. The person with the best record gets a six-pack of Dr. Pepper.

Our Anonymous Guest Picker has his name withheld because he is a professional sports prognosticator. He graciously picked two weeks of the season and had one of the better records of all of the pickers. We are glad to have his picks for the bowl season. Tim is a close personal friend as well as a good sports mind. Nick is a co-worker who is up on his sports. David Paulson is a former wide receiver at Bethel and a great football mind. Finally, Dustin Wasserman selected all of the games I picked this season. He knows his college teams from FBS to D3. Thanks to them for their work on the picks this season.

Gildan New Mexico
Washington State vs. Colorado State
Washington State is big on passing. They win this one.

Guest Picker: Washington State
Tim: Colorado State

Royal Purple Las Vegas
Fresno State vs. USC
Offensive coordinator and Interim Head Coach Clay Helton will be a great head coach someday at a big time program. Right now he has his chance to win a game leading USC. The Trojans face one of the best QBs in college football in Derek Carr. The Heisman Trophy candidate led the nation in passing yards. It will be offense against offense with Fresno State winning.

Guest Picker: USC
Tim: USC
Nick: USC
David Paulson: USC
Dustin Wasserman: USC

Famous Idaho Potato
Buffalo vs. San Diego State
Buffalo had a great season losing only twice in conference play and going 8-4 overall. SDSU open the season losing to FCS Eastern Illinois. They went on to lose their next two games. Then something happened and they turned the season around finishing 7-5. They are 3-1 in overtime games this season. SDSU edges Buffalo.

Guest Picker: SDSU
Tim: SDSU
Nick: SDSU
David Paulson: SDSU
Dustin Wasserman: SDSU

R+L Carriers New Orleans
Tulane vs. Louisiana
This is an underrated game that will provide sparks. Teams are pretty much evenly matched. They have two common opponents. Both lost to South Alabama. Louisiana lost to Louisiana-Monroe. Tulane beat them. Tulane is playing in their home stadium but the deciding factor will be scoring points. Louisiana has outscored Tulane averaging 35.5 points a game while Tulane averages 21.4. The Ragin Cajuns win.

Tim: Ohio
Nick: Ohio

Sheraton Hawaii
Boise State vs. Oregon State
Oregon State has had a tough year, losing their opener to FCS Eastern Washington. They then went on a 6 game winning streak to only lose their final 5 games. Boise State has had a bad season by Boise State standards. Chris Petersen left for Washington but they are getting successful Arkansas State coach Bryan Harsin. Boise State had a tough year but they will beat Oregon State.

Guest Picker: Oregon State
Tim: Oregon State
Nick: Boise State
David Paulson: Boise State
Dustin Wasserman: Oregon State

Tim: Miami, FL
Nick: Louisville

UT Austin should have spoken to UT Knoxville

December 15, 2013

Go 150-43 and win a national title and they push you out the door. Does this sound familiar? Over at the other big time UT (Knoxville) Phil Fulmer went 152-52 and also won a national title. Under his leadership Tennessee was one of the best jobs in football. They pushed him out the door for Lane Kiffin (7-6) and the program spiraled down to a record of 28-34. Before UT (Austin) pressured Mack Brown to resign they should have talked to UT (Knoxville).

This season Penn State has been banned from participating in postseason play including their conference championships and the BCS Championship game. Because Penn State cannot play for the title, they will be ranked dead last in my weekly poll. I will keep track of their record and their opponents but they will remain is last place in the pole.
I rank teams weekly based upon how I believe they will finish at the end of the season and by their records. This is a controversial system but is strangely more accurate than the AP and Coaches poles, which typically have more movement during the season.

My Games of the Week (Week 15)

Lots of upsets this week. Somehow I pulled it out and picked 8 out of 10 games right. Our guest picker went 6-4, which isn’t bad considering the upsets this week. Joining me this week is Tim. Tim is was a wrestler at the U of MN and knows his sports.

Louisville at Cincinnati
The Bearcats have been impressive at times this season. If Teddy Bridgewater stays healthy the game will go to the Cards. Louisville wins.

Tim’s Pick: Cincinnati

MAC Championship: Northern Illinois vs Bowling Green
Bowling Green is good. I wouldn’t want to have them on my schedule this season. Northern Illinois has only one regular season loss in two years and that was to Iowa last year in the final moments of their season opener. They beat Iowa this year and they will beat Bowling Green.

Tim’s Pick: Northern Illinois

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
Bedlam. Where anything can and will happen. The good news is Chokelahoma has lived up to their knick name blowing the big games this season. They won’t win this one either. The Cowboys take this one.

Tim’s Pick: Oklahoma State

Texas at Baylor
When they win Baylor usually blows out the other team. Texas has also won by sizable margins. That is what makes this game so difficult to pick. Texas rebounded from early losses to a strong winning streak only to lose to Oklahoma State. Baylor’s only loss came to the Cowboys. The Bears are at home which is why they will win.

Tim’s Pick: Texas

C-USA Championship: Marshall at Rice
Both teams have recorded strong wins and a few shockers this season. But Rice has an incredible amount of senior leadership, which is why they will win.

Tim’s Pick: Marshall

PAC 12 Championship: Stanford vs Arizona State
Stanford beat Arizona State earlier this season and will do so again.

Tim’s Pick: Stanford

ACC Championship: Duke vs Florida State
Duke has had an incredible season. A win over Florida State is not out of the question. But this is the Seminoles season. Nothing will stop them save for an Auburn team of destiny matchup for the national title but we are getting ahead of ourselves here. Noles win.

Tim’s Pick: Florida State

WAC Championship: Utah State vs Fresno State
Utah State is a program on the rise but Fresno State rebounds with a great QB to win.

Tim’s Pick: Fresno State

Big 10 Championship: Ohio State vs Michigan State
The Luckeyes luck has run out as they finally play a strong defense. Sparty wins.

Tim’s Pick: Ohio State

SEC Championship: Missouri vs Auburn
Missouri is on fire. How can you doubt the Tigers? When they meat up with a teams of destiny. Auburn wins and heads to the national title game.

Tim’s Pick: Auburn

Bonus Game of the Week:
SWAC Championship: Southern University vs Jackson State
These two teams met earlier this season with Jackson State winning. Jackson State also has the better band. The Tigers of Jackson State will win this one.

Tim’s Pick: Jackson State

Mineral Water Bowl Southwest Minnesota State vs Pittsburgh State
Pittsburgh State is not in Pennsylvania but it is in Pittsburgh, Kansas. The Gorillas finished the season 9-2 overall ranking third in the MIAA. The Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State finished 4th in the NSIC with a record of 7-4. I am a fan of NSIC teams but the Gorillas have a good team so I am picking them to win.

Tim’s Pick: Southwest Minnesota State

Through Week 13
Wins: 8
 Losses: 2
Total on the Season
Wins: 94
 Losses: 46

Guest Picker:
Wins: 6 Losses: 4
Total after three weeks:
Wins: 25 Losses: 15

This season Penn State has been banned from participating in postseason play including their conference championships and the BCS Championship game. Because Penn State cannot play for the title, they will be ranked dead last in my weekly poll. I will keep track of their record and their opponents but they will remain is last place in the pole.
I rank teams weekly based upon how I believe they will finish at the end of the season and by their records. This is a controversial system but is strangely more accurate than the AP and Coaches poles, which typically have more movement during the season.
