WINNING RANKING
This ranking is based upon quality wins. In this case a quality win is defined as a win over a team that finished the season with a winning record. The number in parenthesis is their record. The first number behind that is number of teams they have beaten with twelve wins. The second number is the number of teams they have beaten eleven wins, then ten wins, nine wins, eight wins, seven wins and finally six wins. This is a blind ranking that truly looks at wins and nothing else. Because it is winning and beating winning teams that is the true eye test.

Sixteen Teams, One Champion

Sixteen Teams, One Champion
I have harped on expanding the College Football Playoff for several years now and I think we are seeing momentum swing towards an eight-team playoff. If you are going to do and eight team playoff just go ahead and make it sixteen.

Right now, both the fans and players have made a statement saying the current bowl system does not work. Several teams lost bowl games or did not perform as well as they could have because, they were missing players who chose to sit them out so they would be healthy for the NFL Combine. Every football game needs to be meaningful and a good number of the bowl games were not. But a playoff is.

“But a sixteen-team playoff takes away from the regular season and makes it meaningless,” is the argument. If you want to make every game matter start playing an 11-game conference schedule and then have the two best teams from your conference that haven’t met this year meet for the conference championship. The 12th game on your schedule should be reserved for the best non-conference team you can schedule. That way every game matters and we know the conference champion is the best the conference has to offer. But that will never happen because Power Five teams need seven to eight home games to make their athletic department budget work, that according to Tom Osborne.

The bottom line is a sixteen-team playoff will allow the best of the best to go head to head in what we mostly don’t see in the regular season. If you are undefeated or have one loss and are the conference champion you get and automatic bid. Since the rankings for the College Football Playoffs came to be, teams that met these criteria have been ranked in their top sixteen. So lets use their top sixteen teams to see this tournament. This year the field would look like this in the first round.

The sweet sixteen features:
1. Alabama (13-0) SEC Champion vs 16. West Virginia (8-3) At Large Bid
2. Clemson (13-0) ACC Champion vs 15. Texas (9-4) At Large Bid
3. Notre Dame (12-0) At Large Bid vs 14. Kentucky (9-3) At Large Bid
4. Oklahoma (12-1) Big 12 Champion vs 13. Washington State (10-2) At Large Bid
5. Georgia (11-2) At Large Bid vs 12. Penn State (9-3) At Large Bid
6. Ohio State (12-1) Big 10 Champion vs 11. LSU (9-3) At Large Bid
7. Michigan (10-2) At Large Bid vs 10. Florida (9-3) At Large Bid
8. UCF (12-0) AAC Champion vs 9. Washington (10-3) (PAC 12 Champion) At Large Bid

(The locations for these games would be bid out just like men’s and women’s basketball. Teams not in the playoff and still bowl eligible would play in the bowls that did not make bids to host a playoff game. The length of the playoffs would be 4 weeks which is the current length of the bowl season.)

Simulation of the Championship
Using the final year of EA Sports College Football, I ran a simulation of the games. There were only two blowouts and they came early. There were several upsets and it is the upsets that make the NCAA Basketball tourney so popular. Oklahoma and LSU met in the championship game with LSU winning. Here is how the bracket looked:

Conference Records in Bowls
This year the record for conferences is pretty close for the most part to .500. C-USA leads the pack with a record of 4-2 with the SEC going 6-5 and the Big 10 going 5-4. The PAC 12 rebounded to finish with a 3-4 record while the American and MAC stunk it up going 2-5 and 1-5 respectively.

Conference Records in Bowls:
Conference USA 4-2
SEC 6-5
Big 10 5-4
Big 12 4-3
Mountain West 3-2
Sun Belt 3-2
Independents 2-1
ACC 5-5
PAC 12 3-4
AAC 2-5
MAC 1-5

Power Five vs Group of Five
The Power Five and the Group of Five met five times in the bowl season with the games coming to a draw. The Power Five won two bowls and the Group of Five won two bowls. The fifth game was cancelled in Dallas because of severe weather.
