WINNING RANKING

November 29, 2018

WINNING RANKING
This ranking is based upon quality wins. In this case a quality win is defined as a win over a team that currently has a winning record, as of Week 13. The number in parenthesis is their record. The first number behind that is number of teams they have beaten with ten wins. The second number is the number of teams they have beaten nine wins, then eight wins, seven wins, six wins and finally the number of winning teams remaining on their schedule. This is a blind ranking that truly looks at wins and nothing else. Because it is winning and beating winning teams that is the true eye test.

I rank teams weekly based upon how I believe they will finish at the end of the season. This is a controversial system but is strangely more accurate than the AP and Coaches poles, which typically have more movement during the season. If you win I will not move you down. Winning is positive and should be rewarded unlike the AP. This strategy requires me to spend more time to wisely choose who should be at the top but I think it is a good thing. If you beat an FCS team I will not move you backwards for taking a week off. However, there is a good chance that I may not move you up in the poll and a team that played a FBS opponent will get a chance to move up quicker and be rewarded for their choice to play a team at their FBS level.

Picks for the Week

November 21, 2018

So here we are. Rivalry Week. Mix in what is for all intents and purposes the last week of the season or the last week before the conference championships. This is the last weekend for potential kayos. The last week where there is a chance for a giant to slip or Cinderella to make her case. I have said all this season that UCF would go undefeated and was better than other big-name teams. Ohio State fans lit me up back in September. Now the playoff committee agrees. The stats are there to back the Knights up. Ohio State has beaten only one team so far with at least seven wins. UCF has beaten four with seven wins or more. Ranking the teams by wins of seven or more, six and by teams scheduled to play with a winning season places Clemson in first with seven of those wins. They are followed by Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, LSU and then UCF. Full rankings in that category as well as my case for a sixteen team playoff follow here. Then the picks.

PLAYOFF PROJECTIONS
If I could run FBS college football I would expand the playoff to 16 teams with each of the 10 conferences getting an automatic bid if they are A) the conference champion and B) have one loss or are undefeated on the season. The rest of the slots would be filled by at large teams with seeding and spots determined by my rankings.

Here are my playoff projected rankings:
1. UCF (10-0) AAC Champion
2. Clemson (11-0) ACC Champion
3. Alabama (11-0) SEC Champion
4. Notre Dame (11-0) At Large Bid
5. Michigan (10-1) Big 10 Champion
6. Georgia (10-1) At Large Bid
7. Ohio State (10-1) At Large Bid
8. Washington State (10-1) PAC 12 Champion
9. Oklahoma (10-1) Big 12 Champion
10. LSU (9-2) At Large Bid
11. Boise State (9-2) At Large Bid
12. Fresno State (9-2) At Large Bid
13. UAB (9-2) At Large Bid
14. Cincinnati (9-2) At Large Bid
15. Troy (9-2) At Large Bid
16. Utah State (10-1) Mountain West Champion

(The locations for these games would be bid out just like men’s and women’s basketball. Teams not in the playoff and still bowl eligible would play in the bowls that did not make bids to host a playoff game. The length of the playoffs would be 4 weeks which is the current length of the bowl season.)

If we had a sixteen-team playoff using my formula and based on the College Football Playoff committee’s rankings it would look like this:
1. Alabama (11-0) SEC Champion
2. Clemson (11-0) ACC Champion
3. Notre Dame (11-0) At Large Bid
4. Michigan (10-1) Big 10 Champion
5. Georgia (10-1) At Large Bid
6. Oklahoma (10-1) Big 12 Champion
7. LSU (9-2) At Large Bid
8. Washington State (10-1) PAC 12 Champion
9. UCF (10-0) AAC Champion
10. Ohio State (9-1) At Large Bid
11. Florida (8-3) At Large Bid
12. Penn State (8-3) At Large Bid
13. West Virginia (8-2) At Large Bid
14. Texas (8-3) At Large Bid
15. Kentucky (8-3) At Large Bid
16. Utah State (10-1) Mountain West Champion

WINNING STREAK:
UCF 23

WINNING RANKING
This ranking is based upon quality wins. In this case a quality win is defined as a win over a team that currently has a winning record, as of Week 12. The number in parenthesis is their record. The first number behind that is number of teams they have beaten with seven or more wins. The second number is the number of teams they have beaten with winning records followed by the number of winning teams remaining on their schedule. (Example: Georgia has five wins over teams with 7 or more wins and has beaten six teams with winning records. They have one team with a winning record on their schedule)

1. Clemson (11-0) 7-7-1
2. Georgia (10-1) 5-6-1
3. Alabama (11-0) 5-6-1
4. Notre Dame (11-0) 4-5-0
5. LSU (9-2) 4-5-1
6. UCF (10-0) 4-4-1
7. Michigan (10-1) 3-4-1
8. Boise State (9-2) 3-4-1
9. Fresno State (9-2) 3-4-0
10. Washington State (10-1) 2-4-1
11. Army (9-2) 2-3-0
12. UAB (9-2) 2-2-1
13. Cincinnati (9-2) 2-2-0

November 14, 2018

This weekend will settle out the playoff questions. While several teams in the SEC take the week off by playing FCS teams and Clemson is playing Duke, the rest of the teams will try to battle their way into the playoffs. This could be a tipping point for Notre Dame who has trailed to several poor teams at times this season. UCF will have their time to shine facing a one loss Cincinnati and hosting Gameday. It should make for an interesting weekend.

1. UCF (9-0) AAC Champion
2. Clemson (10-0) ACC Champion
3. Alabama (10-0) SEC Champion
4. Notre Dame (10-0) At Large Bid
5. Michigan (9-1) Big 10 Champion
6. Georgia (9-1) At Large Bid
7. Ohio State (9-1) At Large Bid
8. Washington State (9-1) PAC 12 Champion
9. Oklahoma (9-1) Big 12 Champion
10. West Virginia (8-1) At Large Bid
11. LSU (8-2) At Large Bid
12. Boise State (8-2) At Large Bid
13. UAB (9-1) CUSA Champion
14. Buffalo (9-1) MAC Champion
15. Cincinnati (9-1) At Large Bid
16. Utah State (9-1) Mountain West Champion

(The locations for these games would be bid out just like men’s and women’s basketball. Teams not in the playoff and still bowl eligible would play in the bowls that did not make bids to host a playoff game. The length of the playoffs would be 4 weeks which is the current length of the bowl season.)

Syracuse vs Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium
Notre Dame has two more games before their bowl/playoff game. Only one should be a test. This weekend the Irish face that opponent in Syracuse. The Orange have pulled upsets over the past few years.

Playoffs and Picks

November 10, 2018

Some of the Power 5 conferences are facing the reality that their bell cow programs will not be in the playoffs. Let the handwringing begin. If Michigan falls to Ohio State and Georgia stumbles, Washington State and dare we say UCF may have a chance in the playoff. Michigan and LSU have now beaten more teams with winning records than anyone. UCF has now beaten three and face two more this season.

1. UCF (8-0) AAC Champion
2. Clemson (9-0) ACC Champion
3. Alabama (9-0) SEC Champion
4. Notre Dame (9-0) At Large Bid
5. Michigan (8-1) Big 10 Champion
6. Georgia (8-1) At Large Bid
7. Ohio State (8-1) At Large Bid
8. Washington State (8-1) PAC 12 Champion
9. Oklahoma (8-1) Big 12 Champion
10. West Virginia (7-1) At Large Bid
11. Fresno State (8-1) Mountain West Champion
12. LSU (7-2) At Large Bid
13. UAB (8-1) CUSA Champion
14. Buffalo (8-1) MAC Champion
15. Kentucky (7-2) At Large Bid
16. NC State (6-2) At Large Bid

(The locations for these games would be bid out just like men’s and women’s basketball. Teams not in the playoff and still bowl eligible would play in the bowls that did not make bids to host a playoff game. The length of the playoffs would be 4 weeks which is the current length of the bowl season.)

Picks and Stats

November 3, 2018

This could be one of the best college football weekends of the year. We didn’t pick the Alabama at LSU game this week and maybe that is a good thing. The experts say Alabama will run away with it but I say not so fast. LSU at night is a tough fight. Add to that LSU has beaten more teams with winning records that anyone. This is an interesting statistic. Undefeated UCF and one loss USF and Utah State have not beaten a winning team this season. More on those stats in a moment. First, here are my playoff prediction based on how I ranked the teams earlier this week.

1. UCF (7-0) AAC Champion
2. Clemson (8-0) ACC Champion
3. Alabama (8-0) SEC Champion
4. Notre Dame (8-0) At Large Bid
5. LSU (7-1) At Large Bid
6. Kentucky (7-1) At Large Bid
7. Ohio State (7-1) Big 10 Champion
8. Michigan (7-1) At Large Bid
9. Washington State (7-1) PAC 12 Champion
10. Georgia (7-1) At Large Bid
11. Fresno State (7-1) Mountain West Champion
12. Oklahoma (7-1) Big 12 Champion
13. UAB (7-1) CUSA Champion
14. Buffalo (7-1) MAC Champion
15. West Virginia (7-1) At Large Bid
16. Georgia Southern (7-1) Sun Belt Champion

Outside Teams:
Cincinnati (7-1)
Houston (7-1)
Utah State (7-1)
USF (7-1)

(The locations for these games would be bid out just like men’s and women’s basketball. Teams not in the playoff and still bowl eligible would play in the bowls that did not make bids to host a playoff game. The length of the playoffs would be 4 weeks which is the current length of the bowl season.)

WINNING STREAK:
UCF 20
Alabama 10
Notre Dame 9
Clemson 8
