The MVP of the BCS Championship was in the Superdome but Didn’t Play

By Blake Johnson with quotes and background from Nakia Hogan’s article in the Sunday edition of The Times-Picayune.

Alabama long snapper Carson Tinker bent over the football as he has done hundreds of times before Monday night at the BCS Championship at the Superdome in New Orleans.

“There’s the snap and it is good,” said the announcer.

The perfect snap, laces out and end over end through the uprights. 3-0 Alabama in the lead, then a missed attempt and another field goal made and another made and another missed and another made, 6-0, 9-0, 12-0, 15-0. For a team that lost at home to LSU earlier this season on missed field goals, it was like Alabama had help from above. Maybe they did..

Ashley Harrison, the girlfriend of Carson Tinker, told the long snapper that he and the rest of his teammates would be playing in the BCS Championship game. But Ashley would not live to see her prediction come true.

A little more than eight months earlier on a warm Wednesday afternoon, Ashley, her boyfriend and other friends were watching TV in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The weatherman came on and said a tornado was headed in their direction. They hid holding each other in a closet of the home but the winds were too much, pulling them out of the house and prying them apart. When the storm had passed Carson had suffered a concussion, broken wrist and injured his ankle. Ashley’s body was found 65 yards from the house.

In the months following the tornado, the state of Alabama worked to recover. So did Carson, returning to practice in the Fall. The team placed a plaque above his locker at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Ashley’s memory.

“She always wanted me to play my heart out,” Carson Tinker told The Times-Picayune’s Nakia Hogan. “She always told me she wanted me to play in the NFL. She always told me she wanted me to play for the Cowboys. I always keep that with me and hold on to that.”

Tuesday would have been Ashley Harrison’s 23rd birthday. As Alabama’s Trent Richardson ran into the end zone with 4:36 left on the clock, Carson Tinker trotted out on the field one last time for a PAT attempt to make the score 22-0. The PAT hooked right hitting the upright and falling to the ground. Alabama would go on to win 21-0.

Life will not be easy. We lose games at home. We get blocked or our lives hook left, right or hit the goal post. But there are those in our loves that love us. They cheer us on and help us make the field goals in life that give us success. We must enjoy the moment, saver the time with loved ones and love them back.

For more on this story, read the basis of my article, Nakia Hogan’s article in The Times-Picayune. http://www.nola.com/bcs/index.ssf/2012/01/alabama_players_girlfriend_dre.html

Upsets and close games draw the headlines as we narrow the field from the Elite Eight to Final Four

Last week Clemson surprised folks beating Poise State while Alabama struggled with Norther Illinois. There was no struggle this week as the Crimson Tide put a beat down on the Tigers shutting them out and winning 31-0 in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Alabama will platy the winner of the Capitol One Bowl.

The Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio was a high scoring matchup from the start but it was LSU that got behind early. The Tigers would come back but ran out of time as Wisconsin upset the No. 1 ranked team 38-31. The Badgers will play the winner of the AT&T Cotton Bowl.

The AT&T Cotton Bowl was as good as advertized but it was Arkansas’ defense that stopped the Oklahoma State run allowing 11 years on 10 attempts including several key stops that turned the game into the Hogs favor. Arkansas won 31-22 and will play Alabama in Final Four play next week.

The game of the day pitted upset minded Southern Miss against Stanford at the Capital One Bowl. The eagles beat Oregon last week in over time. Could they do the same again? Trailing Southern Miss, Stanford scored with seconds on the clock to send the game into over time. In the second overtime, the Cardinal held the Eagles to a field goal and then scored a touchdown to win the game 33-30. Stanford will take on Wisconsin in Final Four action next week.

January 2, Final Four (Normally played on Jan. 1 but that’s a Sunday in 2012 so we play on Monday)
Wisconsin vs Stanford at the Discover Orange Bowl
Arkansas vs Alabama at the All State Sugar Bowl

January 9, The Allstate Championship Game at the Louisiana Superdome

The road to the national championship took a few interesting turns this weekend. Several of the favorites dominated while a southern team upset a favored opponent. We are now down to the Elite 8 of the playoffs.

LSU and Louisiana Tech started a close first half but in the second half, LSU turned on the gas winning 52-38 at the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl.

Alabama had all it could handle against Northern Illinois in a low scoring defensive battle. The Crimson Tide took a touchdown lead into the locker room at the half and managed a field goal in the second half to win 17-7 at the Outback Bowl.

Arkansas State had multiple opportunities in the red zone but the Oklahoma State defense was the story of the day as they did not allow the Red Wolves into the end zone. The Cowboys won the Ticket City Bowl in impressive fashion 26-3.

West Virginia and Stanford played the sloppiest game of the opening round of the tournament. But it was Stanford that made the lest amount of mistakes winning the Chick-Fil-A Bowl 25-19.

The TCU vs Arkansas at the Hyundai Sun Bowl was sloppy as well as both teams missed PATs. The game came down to an Arkansas TD after a late touchdown. After going the whole game without any body being able to kick in the still El Paso breeze Arkansas’ kicker made his PAT count, winning 13-12.

It was a closely fought game but Clemson added a late TD to solidify their upset win over Boise State 21-7 at the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas

No. 9 and 8 seeds went at it at the Insight Bowl. It was a tight game until Wisconsin with no time left on the clock scored on the last play of the third quarter and held on to win 14-10 over Kansas State.

The AutoZone Liberty Bowl always delivers a good game and did so again this season as So Miss came back scoring TDs in the 4th quarter to take the game into overtime. From there Oregon scored first but missed their PAT. So Miss then scored a TD to tie the game and then made their PAT for the upset win 40-39.

Next weekend in the Elite 8:
Clemson vs Alabama at the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
Wisconsin vs LSU at the Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio
Arkansas vs Oklahoma State at the AT&T Cotton Bowl
Southern Miss vs Stanford at the Capital One Bowl

2011 College Football Playoff Seeds Announced

Ok we don’t have a real playoff system in place but if we did I would like to see it look like this. I present to you a sixteen-team playoff that takes place over a period of four weeks leading to a title game just like NCAA D1 AA, D2 and D3. The eleven conference champions get automatic bids with five at large bids. The at large bids as well as the seeding would be determined by the current BCS rankings so not to ruffle too many of the establishment’s feathers. The current bowls could bid for the playoff locations just like cities bid to host NCAA tournaments in other sports. The bowls that did not win the bids would host teams with winning records like they do now. (Most of these lower bowls are meaningless in the big picture anyway.) Just for fun I will conduct a playoff this year again using this season’s version of EA Sports College Football to simulate the games and report them here.

With that said here is the seeding for this years tournament that will give us a true NCAA D1 college football champion. Not someone’s opinion of who the champion is.

Tournament Seeding:
1. LSU SEC Champion BCS 1
2. Alabama At Large BCS 2
3. Oklahoma State Big 12 Champion BCS 3
4. Stanford At Large BCS 4
5. Oregon PAC 12 Champion BCS 5
6. Arkansas At Large BCS 6
10. Clemson ACC Champion BCS 15
11. TCU Mountain West Champion BCS 18
12. Southern Miss C-USA Champion BCS 21
13. West Virginia Big East Champion BCS 23
14. Arkansas State Sun Belt Champion BCS NR
15. Northern Illinois MAC Champion BCS NR
16. Louisiana Tech WAC Champion BCS NR

Who is left out?
South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Baylor. I know you are saying that these teams could beat the 14, 15 and 16th seeds and probably you are right but don’t tell that to Butler. That is what makes March Madness so exciting. The same should be here.

This weekend’s games:
16. Louisiana Tech vs 1. LSU
15. Northern Illinois vs 2. Alabama
14. Arkansas State Sun Belt vs 3. Oklahoma State

December 17, Sweet 16 (The first date of this years bowl games)
December 24, Elite 8 (You have a captive audience for these four games since folks are stuck at home)
January 2, Final Four (Normally played on Jan. 1 but that’s a Sunday in 2012 so we play on Monday)
January 9, Championship Game (Played on the same date that this years game is played)
